A sprinkle of creativity, a boatload of butter and many occasions to lick the spoon, DAS MAKES CAKES was born of a love of transforming raw ingredients into something spectacular and of course delicious. Custom cakes, cupcakes, macarons and more, I’m just a Mum standing in front of her oven waiting for the timer to sound!
It’s funny, I used to resist the kitchen in much the same way most people resist the dentist chair. My mother (not a baker) would insist I stand and watch her cook, hoping I’d learn something to take me through to my young adulthood. I did learn something… capability. Come university, unlike my pasta-making peers, I was whipping up poached salmon, chocolate mousse and roast chicken gourmet dinners. I’m of the opinion that trusting yourself alone in the kitchen is the first step to culinary success.
The baking side of my kitchen journey didn’t emerge until my early 20s when the realities of being a newly minted journalist in recession-ridden London meant long stints between jobs. Hungry for a new challenge and something to occupy me (other than completing copious job applications), I plucked a cookery book from my collection. Thus began my addiction to baking. Holed up in the one-bedroom flat I shared with my then-fiance, I taught myself to bake brownies, cookies, cheesecakes, cupcakes and more, often joined by my best friend and fellow unemployed media hopeful who relished sampling whatever came out of my oven.
How Das became

Finally gainfully employed at Christie’s (top London auction house), I established myself the Queen Bee of baked goods, smugly satisfied my buttercream swirls were far superior than the melted gloops of icing atop my colleagues’ efforts. My fiance became my husband, we both became parents, and home moved from London to Sydney where we added a further two offspring to our brood of five.
And what of Das Makes Cakes? Having mastered the art of baking delicious treats, the dawn of cake decorating videos astride social media platforms captured my interest, and sparked a need to uplevel my own baking and decorating. 2019 marked a shift from my homemade Mum-made cakes to something bordering on professional… my creative desire to transform the designs bubbling over in my brain from sketchbook to actual cake led to a dedicated Instagram and Facebook, which ultimately led to what is now, my business.
Every creation that comes out of my kitchen is made with love and consideration. I always go the extra mile for my clients because I believe in treating others the way I would like to be treated.
What you order from me for your special occasion is my privilege to create, and that is what will leave the sweetest taste in your mouth.
